What the crew has collected and when each person last synced, with the time on every figure.

A crew board: four surveyors, what each has collected, and how recently each last synced

The question it answers

Is the job on track, without ringing anybody

A manager running four surveyors across a county spends the week guessing. The board turns that into a page: who has each cloud project on their phone, how many features they collected and edited each day, and when each person last synced. It is the difference between calling somebody to ask how they are getting on and looking before you call.

Every number carries the time it was true. That is not decoration: an afternoon’s collecting in a valley with no signal arrives as one figure at six o’clock, and a board that showed the morning’s number with no timestamp would be quietly lying for six hours.

The rule behind the design

Never red on a person

A surveyor who has not synced today is usually working, not idle. So the freshness marker has three states and none of them is an alarm: synced within the hour, synced earlier today, nothing yet today. The wording matches: “no sync yet today” rather than anything that reads as a failing.

Red is kept for problems with an account or the system, which are ours to fix. We put a static version of this board in front of a real manager before building it, precisely to find out whether “no sync yet today” read as out-of-signal or as slacking. It read as out of signal, and that is why the treatment survives unchanged.

The board also separates collected today, which counts each feature on the surveyor’s own calendar date from their own device, from last synced, which is when it reached us. Sync can lag by days, and conflating the two produces a page that blames people for the weather.

What it shows

Counts and times, not positions

The board counts what has synced to your cloud projects: how many features each person added and edited, on the day they did it, and when their phone last synced. It shows no positions and no field values. It is for the admins and managers who run the projects, and each person’s own profile says in plain words what they see.

That statement is about the board and not about the platform, and the difference matters: a synced project obviously contains the features people collected into it, locations included, because that is what syncing a project means. What the board does is count them.

If your organisation is in the EU or the UK, a dashboard naming individuals and their working patterns is monitoring of employees, and the assessment that goes with it is yours to make as the employer rather than ours. We give you an accurate description of what is processed, the retention periods and the list of sub-processors so that assessment is a form to fill in rather than a research project.
