Claude and ChatGPT connector

Design survey projects by talking to Claude (Anthropic) or ChatGPT (OpenAI). Describe the survey, or ask for one from the Survey Template Catalogue, and it creates a draft project here for you to review and publish.

What it is

The Mapit Cloud connector is an MCP connector: a standard way for Claude and ChatGPT to use another service’s tools on your behalf. Connected, they can read how your organisation’s projects are built and create new draft projects in it, while you talk to them in their own app.

It works alongside the Project designer on Mapit Cloud, which has an AI designer of its own that runs in the EU. Use whichever suits you; both make the same kind of draft.

Turning it on

The organisation’s admin turns on Allow Anthropic and OpenAI models to connect on Organisation, Settings. It is off until then, and it is off whenever AI tools is off. Turning it off stops every connection in the organisation at once.

Once it is on, the organisation’s admin and managers can connect. Other members cannot use it.

Adding it to Claude

  1. In Claude, on the web or the desktop app, open Settings, Connectors.
  2. Choose Add custom connector. Name it Mapit Cloud and give the address https://mcp.mapitgis.com.
  3. Leave the sign-in settings as Claude detects them: Sign in now and Register automatically. Leave the client ID, secret and headers empty.
  4. Choose Add, then Connect, and sign in to Mapit Cloud as below.
  5. In a chat, make sure Mapit Cloud is switched on in the connectors menu, then ask for what you need. Claude lists the tools it may use under the connector, and you can choose which ones need your approval each time.

On a Claude Team or Enterprise plan, only the plan’s owner can add a custom connector, under the organisation’s settings. Members then find it in their Connectors list and choose Connect. Claude’s own help, custom connectors using remote MCP, has the current steps.

Adding it to ChatGPT

  1. In ChatGPT on the web, open Plugins in the side bar, then Add, Add custom MCP server.
  2. Name it Mapit Cloud. For the icon you can use the Mapit icon (a PNG small enough for ChatGPT).
  3. Under Connection, keep Server URL and give https://mcp.mapitgis.com. Keep OAuth for authentication, and leave the advanced OAuth settings as ChatGPT finds them.
  4. Tick I understand and want to continue, choose Create as a plugin, and sign in to Mapit Cloud as below.
  5. In a chat, choose Mapit Cloud from your plugins, then ask for what you need.

ChatGPT warns that a custom server is a risk: it is one, for any server you do not trust. This one reads only your projects’ structure, and you choose what it may do on the page that follows. On a business plan your workspace admin may have to allow custom MCP servers first. ChatGPT renames these menus from time to time; its own help has the current steps.

Signing in and allowing it

Either app sends you to Mapit Cloud. Sign in with the emailed code as usual. A page then shows what the connection can and cannot do, the organisations it would work in, and the address it sends you back to. Choose Allow.

Mapit Cloud lets you connect only Claude and ChatGPT. If that page says an app cannot connect, refuse it: an app pretending to be one of them may be trying to get access to your account.

To disconnect, press Disconnect beside it under Connected apps on Your settings (the gear at the top), which stops it at once, or remove the connector in Claude’s or ChatGPT’s own settings.

What you can ask it

  • Which projects, drafts and attribute sets your organisation has, and how each is built.
  • To search the Survey Template Catalogue and explain a template.
  • To design a project: its layers, their fields and types, and the pick lists crews choose from, or to make one from a template.
  • To add or change the pick lists of a draft.

Before it creates a draft it offers to show you the proposed structure, and waits for you to confirm. The structure is checked by the same rules as a design made here.

Reviewing and publishing

A connection never publishes. Each draft appears on Content, under Project drafts, and in the Project designer, with a link back from the chat. Open it, change anything by hand, and press Publish project when it is right. No crew sees it until then.

Where your data goes

A connection reads the structure of your projects, drafts and attribute sets: layer and field names, their types, and pick list values. What it reads goes to Anthropic or OpenAI, which may hold it outside the EU, under their own terms. Everything Mapit Cloud stores stays in the EU.

What it does not do

  • It never sees collected data: no records, locations, photos, WFS or web maps.
  • It does not publish projects or change published ones.
  • It does not use your organisation’s processing credits; it runs on your own Claude or ChatGPT plan.
  • It does not run without limit: each person’s connections make at most a set number of calls a minute and a day, far more than designing needs, so a runaway chat cannot overload the service.
  • It does not check its suggestions against paid standards it cannot read. Check field names and pick list values against your own copy of a standard before relying on them.
