Using Mapit GIS Cloud

Opening a project in QGIS

The Mapit GIS Cloud plugin for QGIS opens a cloud project on your computer as a copy to view, read only. Collecting and editing happen in the Mapit GIS app.

What it does

You sign in in QGIS with the same account and an emailed code, as in the app. The plugin lists the cloud projects you can work in, and Download puts a copy on your computer and opens it in QGIS: every layer, styled, to look at, measure, print or combine with your own data. Download again fetches the crew’s latest work whenever you want it.

The copy is read only. QGIS cannot send anything back to Mapit GIS Cloud: a change there stays in that copy and reaches nobody.

Who can use it

Anybody in the organisation who can open a cloud project’s data: the admin, managers and contributors. A viewer sees a shared project’s outline only and cannot download it; to put data in front of a viewer or a client in QGIS, publish a WFS and share it with them, or give them an access token. Publishing a WFS.

Its own place

Each person has one QGIS place in each organisation, beside their app places, so a computer never takes a phone’s place. Signing in on a second computer is refused, naming the computer that holds the place. Signing out frees it, and the admin or a manager can free it from the roster.
